baby girl names

What’s the matter about baby girl names? It can be difficult to select an excellent name for your daughter, but fortunately, there is a plethora of inspiration available to assist you to make this essential choice, regardless of whether you choose a classical, sweet girl name or a cool, original one.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) publishes a list of the 500 most popular baby names for girls and boys each year, making it an excellent spot to begin your search. The list that follows contains SSA data from the year 2021.

Here you can look through the list of the top 500 baby girl names for some ideas (or to see if your own child’s name is there!).

Names That are Rapidly Becoming Popular

The SSA’s list of fastest-rising names, which includes the names with the largest increases in popularity from one list to the next, is where things become really interesting. These are:

Raya

Wrenley

Angelique

Vida

Emberlynn

Flora

Murphy

Arleth

Ocean

Oakleigh

Freyja

Mylah

Taytum

Elia

Jaylani

Zayla

Navy

Clover

Nyra

One striking feature of these names is their length. It used to be that names for baby girls were trending toward being short, four-letter names (like Luna or Cora), but now it seems that long baby girl names are getting more popular.

And what does that mean for the names that are coming up? It’s possible that the quick climber’s name, Raya, is a nod to the story of Raya and the Last Dragon. Does this mean that Encanto names will be prominent in the next year? In spite of the fact that the name Bruno is rarely spoken, and despite the fact that the names Mirabel/Mirabelle and Dolores have not yet made it onto the SSA’s list of the top 1,000 baby girl names, the name Louisa/Luisa appears to be gaining popularity. Even though the Madrigal family spells it differently, Isabella is consistently in the top ten.

Baby Girl Names That are Becoming More Popular

The five names Emma, Olivia, Ava, Isabella, and Sophia remained at the top of the list of most popular baby girl names from 2010 through 2019 as well as their exact ranks within the top five names, however, changed slightly from year to year. However, in 2020, a newcomer entered the race for the top five: Charlotte snagged the position of most popular baby girl name that year. For 2021, Charlotte will be ranked third, with Amelia climbing to number four.

Names that end with the letter “A” continue to be a popular option. Other famous baby girl names that come from 2021 are Mia, Isabella, Luna, Camila, Gianna, Ella, Sofia, and Aria. Fortunately, the rest of the list is fully uploaded with classic and modern baby girl names such as Eleanor to Layla.

Although Emma and Olivia have maintained their positions as the top two baby girl names since 2016, also there has been an increase in the popularity of a number of other names for girls. For instance, the name Autumn moved up the rankings from number 82 in 2020 to number 66 in 2021. This year, both Alice and Ruby improved their rankings by 12 notches (from position 76 to 64 and 74 to 62, respectively).

There’s no denying that unique baby girl names are likewise very popular. The most popular growing baby girl names from 2020 to 2021 were all rather uncommon, which may indicate that unique baby girl names will remain trendy in the future year. Some names that have risen in popularity recently are Raya (441 places), Wrenley (397 places), Angelique (306 places), Vida (285 places), Emberlynn (284 places), Flora (278 places), and Murphy (278 places) (up 262 spots).

Baby Girl Names That were Popular a Century Ago

The Social Security Administration (SSA) compiled a list of the most popular baby girl names in the 1920s, and it looked quite a bit different than it does today. The most popular baby names in the United States in 1921 were Mary, Dorothy, Helen, Margaret, Ruth, Virginia, Mildred, Betty, Frances, and Elizabeth.

Also common in the 1920s were names with only two syllables (Mary, Helen, Betty, Frances, Anna, Doris, Marie, Alice, and Irene were all among the top 20), names beginning with the letter “M” (in addition to Mary, Margaret, and Mildred, Marie, Marjorie, Martha, and Marion were popular choices), and names that were derived from the natural world (such as Rose, Hazel, Ruby, and Violet).

Still, a name will sometimes become popular again. For instance, Emma was the thirteenth most common name given to baby girls in the year 1900, and it continued to be a popular choice throughout the 1920s. It reached its all-time low of number 463 in 1976, but it has been sitting pretty at number two for the past few years.
