Top 500 Baby Boy Names You”ll Love (2023)
There are a lot of options for baby boy names to choose from which is one of the first important challenging decisions you’ll make as a parent-to-be. Should you go for a name that’s been around for ages, perhaps even one that’s been passed down through the generations? Or, should you choose a more trendy and unique baby boy name?
Fortunately, there are numerous tools available to help you select the ideal name for your child. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is, surprisingly enough, a good starting point. Every year, the SSA puts together a list of the 500 most popular girl names and boy names.

Baby Boy Names That are Becoming More Popular
This year, James and William switched places in the rankings, with James moving up one point to take the number five spot and William falling one spot to take the number six spot. Theodore also made it into the top 10 this year, jumping up 13 spots to take Alexander’s previous spot.
Two-syllable names continue to be popular for baby boys, with Lucas and Henry among the top 10. The remaining names on the list are a mix of time-honored selections and trendy additions; together, they offer suggestions to parents who are looking for the best possible baby boy names for their newest child in either category.
While many of the top baby boy names have stayed among the most popular in recent years, new boy names are on the rise and swiftly nearing the top ranks. For example, Jack improved his ranking by 11 places, moving up from number 21 in 2020 to number 11 in 2021. Levi is likewise on the rise, jumping from its 2020 ranking of 18th most popular to 2021’s position at 12.
Unique names, it seems, are also rather popular. From 2020 to 2021, the names that climbed in popularity the most were all quite distinctive, which may indicate that they will remain popular in 2022. The names Amiri, which rose 534 spots, Eliam, which rose 442 spots, and Colter, which rose 344 spots, all had significant rises. Other popular names for baby boys tend to involve Ozzy, Loyal, Khai, Evander, and Camilo.
Baby Boy Names That were Trendy a Century Ago
When compared to its list of the most popular baby girl names, the SSA’s list of the most popular baby boy names from the 1920s didn’t look very different; many of the names that were most popular for boys a century ago are still popular now.
For instance, William was the third most popular boy’s name in 1921 and is still the sixth most popular boy’s name today. (In point of fact, William has maintained a spot among the top 20 names given to boys since the year 1900.) In 1921, James ranked as the fourth most popular name, and it still maintains that position now.
Also popular in 1920 were names beginning with the letter “R” (Robert and Richard were also among the top ten names in 1921), names with one syllable (in addition to John, George, and Frank were popular choices one hundred years ago), and names with two syllables that ended with the letter “D.” (such as Harold, Edward, Donald, Howard, David, and Leonard).
